Job description

Resourcing Group are currently recruiting for Mechanical Fitters for an NHS Trust based in Birmingham.

Roles are expected to go permanent after 12 weeks.

To undertake a wide range of work, ranging from day-to-day routine maintenance to more complex and non - routine, requiring an intermediate/high level of theoretical and practical knowledge normally acquired through formal training and at least 3 years relative experience in the role or similar.

Responsible for fault finding, installation and maintenance across the Trust properties.

Provide technical advice to other Estates maintenance staff and contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures.

  • Core skills to include, but not limited to:

· Mechanical Systems

· Pressure Systems

· Heating Systems

· DHW Systems

· CW Systems

· Air conditioning systems

· Ventilation Systems

An element of multi-skilling across the Estates trades will be required, but not limited to:

  • Pump isolation and removal (Mechanical and Electrical Services)
  • Water heater isolation and removal (Mechanical and Electrical Services)
  • Replacing electrical tubes and lamps
  • Fire alarm testing
  • Minor nurse call repairs
  • Resetting of RCDs
  • Assist with re-fuelling of diesel generator day tanks
  • Touching up paintwork and making good
  • Repairing and modifying false ceiling tiles
  • Minor floor repairs
  • Minor carpentry repairs
  • Making good minor defects to building fabric by application of commercial fillers
  • Fix and replace ceramic wall and floor tiles
  • Fitting of locks and padlocks

Safety, competence, and limitation of the individual's expertise will be assessed and evaluated as part of the multi-skilling process.

Multi-skilling tasks will include, but are not limited to, (subject to additional/recognised training where required) some or all of the following:
  • Unblocking of macerators, toilets, sinks and drains
  • Re-washering taps and ball valves (limited to ½" and ¾" domestic pipework services)
  • Pump isolation and removal (Mechanical and Electrical services))
  • Water Heater isolation and removal (Mechanical and Electrical services)
  • Touching up paintwork and making good
  • Repairing, modifying false ceiling tiles
  • Minor carpentry repairs
  • Making good minor defects to the building fabric by the application of commercial fillers
  • Medical Gas terminal unit service and replacement

Key Result Areas:

Notify a Team Leader or Estates Officer of any anomalies or deficiencies within the PPM system

  • Ensure all repairs are carried out without undue delay and that a Team Leader or Estates Officer is informed of any delays in carrying out this work in a timely manner
  • Provide Team Leader or Estates Officer lists to of materials required for the execution of work
  • Fully understand the inter-relationship between Estates (including Medical Engineering and Capital Projects - also within Estates) and the end user
  • Maintain effective communication with the end user providing progress reports, details of work and general update of work in progress and to advise of any undue delays in carrying out work
  • Provide advice, instruction and training to Trainees, Maintenance Assistants/Apprentices and other staff where the subject matter is straightforward i.e. new equipment, new installations
  • Diagnose and repair faults on all types of plant, equipment, and building services within the Trust
  • Interpret and work from instructions, drawings and specifications with minimal supervision and using own initiative
  • Ensure that the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) is carried out thoroughly, efficiently and promptly providing full and complete records
  • Problem solve and fault find on complex equipment, which requires making judgements involving a range of facts and a range of options
  • Plan and organise own work schedule in conjunction with the Team Leaders some of which will be on-going and requiring liaison with other members of staff to enable organising times for access.
  • To use materials, substances with regard to Health and Safety and COSHH regulations
  • Responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of the Trust's physical assets
  • Responsible for security of all workplaces inc workshops and other buildings/rooms/depts whilst carrying out lone-working within these areas
  • Frequent concentration required where the work pattern is un-predictable i.e. carrying out and day to day reactive maintenance
  • Undertake acceptance testing of new equipment and participate in surveys/audits as necessary to own work
  • There may be occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances whilst working on Wards/in the Mortuary i.e. contact with terminally ill patients/working around dead bodies
  • New starters will be required to undergo a probationary period - a minimum of 6 months
